Why Choose Swinburne Sarawak?

Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus is the foreign branch campus of Swinburne University of Technology (Melbourne, Australia) located in Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia.

Established in 2000, Swinburne Sarawak operates as a partnership between the Sarawak State Government and Swinburne Australia.

The initiative behind the Sarawak campus is part of a long term strategy by Swinburne Australia to “globalize its operations and provide its students with international living, working and learning opportunities”.

The Swinburne Sarawak campus operates as a full-fledged branch campus, joining five other Swinburne campuses in Melbourne, Australia, and is under the academic control of Swinburne’s Higher Education Division in Australia. Courses offered are identical to those available in Melbourne and graduates are awarded Australian testamurs.

Swinburne’s Sarawak campus is situated in Kuching. The capital city of the state of Sarawak, Kuching has been described as one of the most liveable and attractive cities in the region.

Home to just over 600,000 people, one thing most visitors notice about the city is its greenery and clean environment. This is not surprising as it is modelled as a garden city.

Travelling within Kuching is also easy as public transportation is easily available.

There are many places for shopping, dining and entertainment. A large shopping mall is within walking distance from Swinburne Sarawak and is a popular haunt among students from the University.

There is a good choice of coffee bars, restaurants and cafes serving local as well as Western and other Asian cuisines. Cineplexes show the latest Hollywood hits while lounge bars are popular among locals and tourists alike.

Its current student population of more than 3,500 is expected to reach 5,000 by 2013. Apart from Malaysia, its students hail from more than 40 countries, making it a truly international university.

Only 15 minutes from the Kuching city centre and nestled within commercial and residential areas, the campus offers undergraduate degrees in engineering, science, commerce/business, ICT and design. These are identical to those programs offered by its home campus in Melbourne and parchments are awarded by Swinburne Australia.

Also available are postgraduate research programs at PhD and Masters Level in these disciplines.

Others include one-year foundation programs in business, design, engineering/science and IT/multimedia as well as diploma programs in engineering and business which articulate into degrees. A range of English language proficiency programs are also available.

Students may complete their degrees entirely in Kuching or transfer to complete them at one of our campuses in Melbourne.

Applied vocational emphasis and direct placements in industry are a feature of many Swinburne’s undergraduate courses. The focus on practical training is an integral part of the program structure and the University is well known for producing graduates that are employment-ready.

Swinburne Sarawak maintains a strong technology base and important links with industry. It aspires to be a research intensive university and is developing its research capability with a focus on areas relevant to industry. With state-of-the-art facilities, it conducts research including those in information security, biotechnology, mechatronics and software engineering.
